May, 1968

Dear Mr Feinberg and Mr Kasrils,

Thank you very much for sending me your collection of my letters from 1950 to 1968. I have seldom come across a book that delighted me more and I earnestly hope that it will be published … I read it at once on receipt of it.

Some of the letters especially delight me, notably the one from Paul Altmann, a six year old. I was also much pleased by a letter on education which expresses my views more succinctly than they are generally expressed. The belief which I state in that letter is the opposite of that held by most educators: namely, education should encourage the young to question what has been taken for granted.

It seems to me that your choice of letters is admirable and gives a very just picture of my opinions at various dates. I also think your editing and notes and the forewords to each section are excellent. And I like the title!…

Yours sincerely,

Bertrand Russell
