“In the case of the Newhaven mutineers, it can be said with confidence that, in significant ways, their actions differed from the series of spontaneous bread riots which had been taking place throughout the country. This action was taken by a large body of men used to discipline, and this discipline seems to have been maintained in the execution of a plan. Their action was clearly a form of organised protest as well as an effort to obtain bread. No violence was done to their officers, and much of the grain was distributed to the local labouring population.”
