“This article developed out of two speeches presented by the author last year, one in August at the Korcula Summer School in Dalmatia, where since 1963 Marxist philosophers and sociologists from the East and the West have held annual meetings, and the other in September at the Colloquium in Hercegovina (Montenegro) organized by the Institute for Social Sciences in Belgrade and the Gramsci Institute in Rome, at which sociologists from all the Eastern countries (including the USSR) discussed “Social Stratification in Socialist
Countries”.”
