Description

By Alan Roberts

“The baneful social effects of this creation of a “standard consumer” – including the subordination of mass culture to this priority goal, the intrusion of economic imperatives into the “private” life of the drawing-room – have been dissected by many authors (most of them following Marcuse); these analyses are of great importance, but are not relevant to the present discussion. All we need to note is that the bulk of the present-day problems associated with growth of the G.N.P., use of resources and pollution in fact stem from a specific stage in the economy: that of “consumerism”.”
