Shortly after the 1968 ‘May Events’ in France, Andrée Hoyles undertook a detailed survey of the factory occupations which, although not highly publicised, were a crucial component in that dramatic and inspiring upheaval. She interviewed numerous trade union officials and activists, conducted a detailed questionnaire and made an exhaustive study of the many articles, pamphlets and leaflets that were written in the course of the struggles.

This book records the results of that unique study, together with Hoyles’ own stimulating reflections on the significance and achievements of these factory occupations. Not only is it indispensable reading for socialists and students of French politics but it will be of great interest to all those concerned with the struggle towards freedom.

Andrée Hoyles spent several years as a lecturer in the Department of French at Hull University. During her stay she was active in the May Day Manifesto and Workers’ Control Movements; and was a Councillor of the Institute for Workers’ Control. She returned to France to teach and undertook research on the New Left during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Andrée Hoyles died on 8th March 2024: International Women’s Day.
